Someone Cuts My Hair While I Sleep by Todd Fisher
This was my first photography book I've ever purchased. I was instantly drawn towards it's grungy large scale cover. I hadn't heard of the photographer Todd Fisher, but I feel in love straight away.
The first double page spread is blank. I feel this gives it an edge and is a good way of introducing the contents of the book.
Title and Author - minimalistic.
Straight away I was impacted by these huge spreads. It makes them appear more realistic and relatable. Due to the size of the photograph and it stretching over the two pages it makes it
appear almost 3-Dimensional. It creates an effect of being able to actually image how the scene within the photograph looked life from my own perspective - I felt like I could easily be stood there taking the photography myself. This really interests me as it engages the viewer and helps bring the photographer's visuals to life.
PDA (public display of affection) can often be super uncomfortable for some people and something not everyone likes to see. Todd Fisher somehow makes it intriguing and beautiful.
The grungy, moody, urban vibe they give off through the faded shots capture the sense of dissipated youth.
Capturing people, their surroundings, grungy urban scenes, posed settings, nature, landscapes etc... are all things I love to photograph - similar to Todd's work. I like the idea that the photos don't necessarily match, are in any particular order, or have to link.
Doing something similar with my own book design gives me so much freedom to explore various styles of shots, yet still be able to incorporate them as one body of work.
Here I drew out some layouts of how the photographs are presented throughout the book. They don't seem to be in any particular pattern or order, however, the book begins and ends with double page spreads that are filled with just a photograph.
Thank you message by the author/photographer.
