Design idea proposals and feedback

As part of a critical feedback session I presented these design proposals and noted down the reactions, suggestions and comments.

Design 1

  • Using the original digital shots taken over summer, which focused on different cultural elements of the Northern Quarter.
  • Due to the good quality shots there is less of a restriction on the dimensions of the book as photos can be stretched
  • The original shots are 34.14 cm x 25.60 cm
  • This gives the capacity to create a large book, such as a coffee table style publication
  • As the photos will be the main focus, using high gloss stock would give a professional feel and aesthetic to the design
  • Minimal text throughout the publication
  • However, relying on just the aesthetics of publication with little context or interesting information is something that could hinder the potential of the publication.
Feedback

  • high resolution photos means you could go really big and get away with it, a coffee table style book with a hardback cover and high gloss pages is something that can be easily achieved
  • have a lot of resources

Design 2

  • Reshoot the photos in 35mm film using a 90's era camera
  • Adds more context and possibly makes more appealing to the target reader
  • Represents the nostalgia seen throughout the area itself
  • Stock - rustic, large weight, different colours throughout
  • Medium size, due to restriction of scans/original photo quality
  • More personal? Like a journal or collage
Feedback

  • fits the NQ the most with the style 35mm represents
  • could be quite nostalgic e.g. using black and white photography
  • explores the past of the area and its cultural influences through history

Design 3 (Hybrid)

  • This design has influences from both design 1 and 2
  • Using both styles of photography, often side by side, would create an interesting perspective
  • Means that the history of the NQ and the present/future can be represented
  • With different eras of influence being represented, it gives more space to include much more context and written content into the publication
  • The design aspect would also have to met in the middle of 1 and 2
  • Possibly restricted by size of 35mm film photos, however they could still be included in larger sized book, but they would have to be organised where there would be multiple on a page or just one with a lot of white space
Feedback

  • showcasing both sides of the photography is really interesting and gives the content more depth and meaning
  • would be interesting to see how it the final outcome looks, bring two ideas together gives lots of room for creativity and development
