Collaborative practice - Final group

  • At the second speed dating session Meg got talking to Alice, a fellow graphic designer and friend. So we decided we would be a trio.
  • At first I was apprehensive about working with a friend, however, I thought it would be an interesting opportunity and in the design world collaborating with a friends is not uncommon.

Penguin - Adrian Mole - Textures

A paper texture feeling is something I want to give my design. I feel like a lot of the time with my work I leave it finished as a digital solution and don't necessarily think any further about the physicality aspect.

To avoid this with this my book designs I have decided to order some G.F. Smith stock that mostly possess a type of texture to them so I can layer these on within my design.

I picked the majority of these colours as I feel they address a more younger audience. The brighter colours to me represent the the 80's in a way as they give of that fun, youth-filled, carefree vibe I often see within design work at that time. This could also be a nod to the adult audience that the brief states is a important factor to consider as they also wish the consumer (adults buying the book for their children) - so making it relatable for them is something I am incorporating.

These were chosen so I can experiment with a neutral/simple background a potentially busy design, to create a juxtaposition between the two.

Collaborative Practice - Thirsty Planet research

"Thirsty Planet was launched in 2007 because as bottled water producers (and good ones too!) we wanted to ‘give something back’. We knew we couldn’t solve a global problem single-handedly but we wanted to try and make a real difference.
We partnered with Pump Aid (because they are the best at what they do!) and created a brand whose sole purpose was to raise money towards water projects in the most disadvantaged parts of Africa. These are the parts of Africa where people die drinking from contaminated water sources, the parts where children can’t attend school because they have to walk miles to collect water, the parts where communities are malnourished because they haven’t water to grow crops.
We’ve now raised over £1.7 million which has helped fund the build and maintenance of over 9,000 elephant pumps, giving over a million people access to a lifetime’s supply of clean, safe water. Incredible but true.
Thirsty Planet spring water is as pure as you can get, with a perfect mineral balance. If consumers can enjoy our water andcontribute to Pump Aid what could be simpler?" -

Collaborative practice - Deciding on a group

  • Initially I wanted to work on the Anti-fur fashion campaign for D&AD, however, after going talking to the group of people at the speed dating session I didn't feel that comfortable with collaborating with some of the people there as it was split between graphic designers and animation.
  • After talking to some of the animators it become clear for the majority that for them the project would take an animated direction and basically as a graphic design I would be expected ti illustrate/design the work for it.
  • I felt really uncomfortable about this as I know illustration isn't my strongest skill and I didn't necessarily want to work with an animator if this was the case and the other graphic designers were hesitant to work with each other as I think we were all hoping to collaborate with an illustrator.
  • Decided to have a wonder and see what other people were doing, but by then it seemed everyone was in groups already - ended up leaving it a few days to really think about what other project I could do and who I wanted to collaborate with.
  • At the Nest Magazine launch I bumped into Meg, who's an animator and she was happy to work with me on the Fur brief, interestingly she was looking to create something editorial and less animation based. Editorial is a great interest of mine so we decided to work with each other and hopefully find another group member to balance out the work.

With Alec's permission  I decided to draw from this photo. His look reminds me of Adrian.
