Notes
The Grid - represents the basic structure made up of a series of intersecting straight or curved lines used to structure content.
Legibility - quality of being clear enough to read
"Legibility is not communication; but, in order to communicate type it has to be legible." - Spiekermann
Readability - the ease with which a reader can understand a written text
- the way in which words and blocks of type are arranged in a layout
tracking/kerning
leading/line height
type size
contrast
hierarchy
"Basically we stick to more than two type sizes on a printed page, but there are exceptions." - Vignelli
Allignment -
Flush Left - One of the more readable layouts of texts. When you paragraph text to left aligned, a straight left edge appears. You can read each line by simply moving your eyes to the left edge each time. This makes your paragraphs faster and easier to read because the your eyes don’t have to work as hard to find where the line starts each time.

Centred - can be quite difficult to read, this is because when you center your text, the starting place of each line changes. This forces you to work harder to find where each line begins to continue reading. Without a straight left edge, there is no consistent place where you can move your eyes to when they complete each line.

Burger Urge
This is a menu I have found by researching on google.
Reasoning
- red colour of subheadings and title are unclear against the grey background, making not legible
- kerning of the subheading text is not consistent
- prices of food does not line up or reflect a consistent position for each food option
- all the text used in the design uses flush left - which gives consistency and good readability for the customer, however, it is not necessarily well done - could be shaped and lined up to create a sharper look
Here is a quick grid I created from the left side of the menu.
- chose helvetica as it's simple and easier to read than original font
- decided to keep to a similar colour palette to the original as I felt it keeps with the style of the burger restaurant
- created a grid similar to the original two, although I made it more equal and spaced out
- kept the text left flush, but laid out the words more carefully, trying to avoid any one word sentences as it breaks the flow for the reader
- took out the lines used to separate the food prices to the food descriptions - felt it was unnecessary and defeated the object of using a grid, when it exists invisibly
