Design Principles - What is a Book? - Leeds Book Store

BOOK STORE - LEEDS

Visiting here often is what inspired the design decision to create a photography publication.

They have a large variety of magazines, editorials, zines, posters, prints, books etc...

Having a publication of my own in here would be a dream come true.

Study Task 09 - What is a book? - Bookbinding

Book Binding Techniques

On the booking binding workshop I took at Vernon St, theres are the techniques we explored and learnt.

simple stitch
  • 3-hole stitch
  • simplest bind
  • easy and cheap to make for small notebooks

5-hole bind

  • punched 5 holes into each piece of card
  • knot made in the middle pages so it cannot been seen on the outside
  • weaved thread through one side and then continues by wrapping it around the sides and continuing

  • two separate sides
  • makes a chain of paper between them - made up of folded paper glued together
  • covers made up of card layered with sticky-back material
  • no stitching was involved

Design Principles - What is a Book? - Concept #3

#3

Photography Book

Over the last few months I have really began to get involved with my photography, exploring different types and experimenting a lot. I have many favourite shots of mine, but never get to use them for anything, except posting them on my Instagram or personal blog.

I save them in a folder on my computer and add my favourite shots every time I do a photoshoot.
Bringing these shots together could create a nice collection of my work so far as a photographer.

I have also began collecting my photography books, it is only a small one to begin with, but I can imagine it growing rather large over the years.

I feel I would want to create a concept behind the book that links up the content and has a common theme that the audience can experience.

Personal Journal: A Time Capsule

For this concept I thought I could document my particular journey through my first year so far. Including experiences of my life at leeds through photos, stories, quotes, words, illustration, collage etc..

I have already been recently creating my own collages from photographs and other materials. e.g.

Collaborating with image and type could be an interesting work process. Some of my favourite photographers/artists work using this kind of process. One of my favourite musicians A$AP ROCKY collaborates with Tan Camera (tancamera.com) .

The colours, photography and scrapbook style editing create an interesting vintage vibe that excels in all properties of the pieces. A$AP ROCKY regularly posts these on this instagram account, often designing the pieces so they link with each other and create a story.

This is a way I can express my journey in Leeds over the past few months I have lived here.
It is also interesting how these pieces have not even been published physically and are all based online. This is something I could consider when creating my book. Do I want it to be digital? Physical? or Both? The question of "What is a Book?" is rather subjective.

Fashion Magazine/Zine/Editorial piece

I am passionate about the fashion world and how it's always constantly evolving. In recent years the industry has suffered in sales of physical magazines and with that the 'zine' seems to be rising from the ashes. A zine simply a self published booklet or publication, usually made up of text and images that circulates no more than 1000 copies.

This would be perfect for this particular brief, producing a zine allows me to express my work over ten double page spreads, which would be more than enough for the size of a zine.

Here are some examples of what I could produce:

Bandlands 777

Driven by photography and typography this aesthetic zine expresses everything typical about a fashion magazine. It comes across as less commercial, as they do not contain any advertising. It focuses on more of the aesthetic and art.

This is their second issue.

It contains a pullout A2 poster within. This is an interesting idea I could explore within my own design.

"There is no obvious answer to ‘where to next?’, only one definite; we are next."

Mushpit

The Mushpit is another zine. Their are now on their #8 issue and grown quite significant popularity over the last few years. Starting off with tacky and nostalgic low resolution Britney spreads, to now where the two owners are hiring their favourite photographers and editors. Each issue has been sold out up until now and their following continues to grow.

It's design is very non-traditional as it is put together more like a scrapbook in some ways. It feels sometimes unorganised and somewhat imperfect; which is the appeal.

Playing around with my favourite pop culture moments, designing my own brands/advertisement and expressing my own fashion aesthetics seems like a possible root I could go down and enjoy.
